Music has been central to Rachel’s life for as long as she can remember. She started piano lessons at age five and sang anywhere she got a chance. Rachel is passionate about teaching the whole person. Rachel has over ten years of musical instruction experience including private lessons, vocal audition preparation, musical theater vocal directing, and seven years as an elementary music classroom teacher.
Her students have ranged from ages 5-70. She has a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Classical Voice Performance and a Bachelor’s in Theatre from The City College of New York. Additionally, Rachel has a Master’s of Arts in Teaching from Western Oregon University. Rachel is committed to teaching through the lenses of Inclusion, Social Emotion Regulation, Culturally-Staining Pedagogy, Trauma Informed Practices, and Neurodiversity.
She believes music is healing and should be accessible to everyone. Rachel custom-tailors curriculum to match a student’s needs, skill level, interests, and learning goals. Though classically trained in both voice and piano, she performs and teaches in a wide variety of genres. Rachel uses classical vocal techniques as a solid foundation in coaching students to sing styles such rock, pop, and musical theatre in a safe and healthy manner that protects the voice.
For piano students, Rachel combines traditional pedagogy with chord theory so students can access any genre including rock, folk, county, pop, funk, etc. She understands that students are more engaged and committed to learning music when it is relevant to their lives. When she isn’t teaching or performing music, Rachel enjoys long-distance running, and spending time with her family camping, hiking, and chilling at the beach. You can also catch her binge-watching anything Star Wars or Marvel related.
